In terms of audience development and the age old debate of demographics vs psychographics, we come down on the side of the latter and have created an exercise to help you better connect with your ideal audience.

Hello Creative Seekers!

When it comes to developing an audience, it’s easy to engage in a results-driven quest to drill down into demographics. But those stats are pretty much useless to you while you’re in the midst of a creative process, and they may even damage you. That’s because audience demographics tend to get you thinking in abstract terms that force “solutions” onto creative material rather than organically allowing your project to realize its own unique potential.

That’s why we favor psychographics over demographics when conceiving of your ideal audience. You’re actually on a quest to connect with the people who already share your taste in terms of art, filmmaking, literature. Visualizing those people – and engaging in active imagination sessions with those figures – WILL help you during the creative process. It’s simple – the folks who share your vibe will be more likely to encourage your instincts in the right direction for all the creative choices you face. So create some of them, and shoot for that.

If you have 45 minutes, an imagination and a willingness to explore, try our FREE Ideal Audience exercise to see if it fortifies you as you bang out that next draft.

Download the exercise here.

Need some more context to help you through the exercise? Please check out the video below.

And if you like our list, well, you’ll love our Patreon page. For $3.50 a month, you’ll receive additional filmmaking resource, like this list, and you’ll also be able to participate in our online cinema cafés, where we do a deep dive into one classic film each month.

And if you’re like, nah, I’ll never pay a monthly fee for filmmaking content, no worries! Instead, you can watch and subscribe to our Fatelink YouTube channel (youtube.com/@fatelink) where we release weekly videos about the creative process. Your support there is very appreciated and enables us to continue providing free resources like the classic film list. So grab a snack, watch and like some videos, and leave a comment or two, if you’re inspired.

Below you’ll find our latest video, where we discuss the top 10 films of 2023 and chart what you – as a storyteller – can learn from each of them. Watch here.

If you’re serious about improving your cinema education, why not work off a list of classic films? Working off a list keeps you focused and provides a small way to reward yourself for each film you see. Checking a film off a list feels like getting a gold star, and our form ensures that you’ll remember something significant about each of the films you see.

Try the list by downloading it here. For Free.
